“I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits
and in his word I put my hope.
I wait for the LORD
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.” Psalm 130:5-6
I’ve been contemplating the psalmist’s words about waiting and hoping. In the midst of an ever and rapidly changing world, those who ground themselves in God’s word truly have hope. The word of God is unchanging, and the Kingdom of God is unshakeable. So, no matter what we face—including trials, hardships, pain, uncertainties, and even death itself—we never need to lose heart because we know that the Kingdom of God will absolutely prevail.
I confess that, at times, I’m tempted to imagine the worst possible scenario for how things in this world might unfold. But I know that even the worst situation I can imagine will never be the final scene. Hope is what grounds us in the reality of the Kingdom—a Kingdom of Goodness and Love that knows no end. Though heaven and earth will pass away, Jesus tells us that His words never will. (Matthew 24:35). We also know that Christ is the Word who was from the beginning (John 1:1), and He is the Word who will be for all eternity.
The promise of salvation in Christ is that He is with us, and we are with Him—now and forever. This is reason for hope. And just as the psalmist waited for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, for followers of Christ, hope is more than wishful thinking. It is the assurance of what will be, just as surely as the morning follows the night.
