You will keep him in perfect peace,

Whose mind is stayed on You,

Because he trusts in You.

Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

An old hymn recently came to mind that I’ve since been listening to first thing every morning. While the entire lyric is beautiful, the phrase that has stood out to me the most simply says,

Come Thou fount of every blessing

tune my heart to sing Thy grace.

What comes to my mind is an old-school radio dial that I remember manually adjusting to find the station I wanted to hear. If you’re my age or older, you likely recall that this dial was also known as a tuner. It filtered through the radio frequencies—all of the static, stations, and transitional noise—before eventually landing right where I wanted to be. That’s the image I have as I listen to this hymn every morning. Most simply put, I need God to tune my heart to sing His grace.

God is always with us but never forces us to keep our minds and hearts tuned to Him. All that God asks of us is by invitation, never coercion, and yet it’s as we keep our minds and hearts on Him that we will experience His presence and peace most clearly. And the most beautiful part in all of this, as the hymn suggests, is that it is God doing the tuning as we ask Him to. That, in and of itself, is an expression of God’s grace! He’s here and waiting for us to allow Him to tune our hearts to Him.

Starting our days by allowing God to tune our hearts to sing His grace is the best decision we will ever make on any given day. And just as He promises, He will keep us in perfect peace as our minds are stayed on Him.

(In case you need one, here’s the arrangement I’ve been listening to!)
